Albert by Donna Jo Napoli is a beautifully illustrated children’s book about a man named Albert who is hesitant to go out for a walk. One day he is sticking his hand out through the window grate to check the weather to see if it’s just right, when a cardinal comes and drops a twig in his hand. Mommy and Daddy cardinal build a nest in his hand while he stands at the window. The eggs are laid, and Albert continues to stand at the window because the nest would fall if he pulls his hand back in through the window grate. By helping a baby bird learn to fly, he is inspired to step outside and take his walk even when everything isn’t ‘just right’.
