Photoshop911, Part One

Welcome to Photoshop911 (Adobe Photoshop)!  Welcome!  Did I just say that twice?

If you need simple Photoshop help, here is the place to get it!

What are quick keys, you ask?  Quick keys, found in all or almost all the programs out there that I know of, are a combination of keys held down and pressed at the same time (or, in some programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator, one key).  When you go to the menu bar, you can see the quick key combos for next to the word for the thing they do.  I have the quick keys for the things I will explain later on on this page where I explain about the stuff the certain quick key/s are for (quick keys in italic).  But here is a handy list of them all.  Some handy quick keys to know:

  • apple z undo
  • apple o open (photo)
  • apple s save
  • apple w close photo
  • apple q quit Photoshop (Photoshop may slow down your computer, it’s such a big app)
  • tab see your photo without the menu/tool bars, layers, etc. distracting you
  • f when you are in a mode besides Standard Screen Mode and you want to get to Standard Screen Mode

Screen Modes:

Shown here are the different screen modes.

Opening Photos (steps labeled):

quick keys: apple o

Closing Photos:

To close a photo (in standard screen mode), click the red dot at the upper left-hand corner of the photo.  To hide a photo, click the yellow dot, which is beside the red dot.  If you are not in standard screen mode, or if you are, go up to the menu and click on ‘file’.  Then select ‘close’.  The quick keys for this procedure are apple w .

Saving Photos:

NOTE: DON’T FORGET TO SAVE!!!You can save the changes you have made (changes will be explained further on) by simply doing (quick keys) apple s .   This saves the changes to the actual photo.  Another way of saving this was is going to the menu bar where it says ‘file’ and selecting ‘save’ from the pull-down menu.

NOTE: This (saving as) saves a copy of the item, it doesn’t change the actual item.

Shown here is how to save, and how to save as.

When you save for web and devices you can change the size of the photo, as well as other things.

Cropping images suggestions:

  • Don’t crop through an eye, either keep both eyes or only one.
  • Don’t crop off the hands and leave the wrists behind (just plain wrong).
  • Don’t crop off the feet and leave the ankles (a little disturbing, severed feet).
  • Don’t chop through the neck (not nice).
  • Eyes are important.
  • Remember the rule of thirds (later explained).
  • Objects off-centered are kinda fun.
  • The closer you get to a person’s face, the more familiar they seem sometimes.
