I really enjoy reading the Winnie the Horse Gentler series, by Dandi Daley Mackall. I even gave it the Oldberry Award of the month! The eight-book series stars a fictional girl named Winifred Willis. After her mother, a famous horse gentler, died in a car accident, her father moved them away from their home in Wyoming, moving them to all the I states in America, before finally settling down in the small town of Ashland, Ohio. Known as Odd-job Willis around town, her father is not very popular, and neither is she among the popular girls at school. Winnie compares the popular group to a herd of horses. They are very alike. In the wild, horses have herds. It is almost impossible for a new horse to get in. With the popular group, it seems impossible for Winnie, the outsider, to break into their herd.
Horses are her specialty. Give her a horse any day! From answering horse questions on the Pet Help Line, to taming the wildest horse in Ashland, Winnie excels with horses. Determined to follow in her mother’s footsteps, Winnie starts a horse gentling business. But she cannot escape the fact that the world is full of humans, along with horses. As Winnie perseveres, things start to get better.
Winnie also appears in the book Dark Horse, from the Starlight Animal Rescue series. She is mentioned a few times in the Backyard Horses series.
